Pound Ridge Volunteer Ambulance Corps
“When I try to explain what I do, the first objection that I hear (and it’s almost reflexive) is 'I could never do that - I can’t stand the sight of blood!’. However, most of our calls don’t involve seeing blood. We help our neighbors who have fallen and are too weak to get up, who may have had a stroke or heart problems or an asthma attack, or who just don’t feel well. There are occasional car crashes and broken bones, but we’re fortunate here in Pound Ridge that we don’t have major highways or industry. It just doesn’t get that gory, and, frankly, if you’ve raised children, you’ve already dealt with stuff much ickier than what we see on almost all calls.” Marty Kremer, former member & officer for 20 years
We respond from home or work or shopping or the park. We are dispatched through portable radios and text messages. Sometimes we’ll go out 2 or 3 times in a day and sometimes we’ll go a week or more without a call. Almost all of our calls are in Pound Ridge, but we might be asked to respond to help out in our neighboring towns. We take our patients to Northern Westchester (Mt. Kisco), Stamford and Norwalk Hospitals and Westchester Medical Center.
